John Maeda, President of RISD and former Director of the Media Lab at MIT takes a look back at the evolution of Processing. He tells the story of Casey Reas and Ben Fry and their efforts for both, the scripting language and the community around Processing.org.

The truth is that I almost stifled the nascent project’s development, because I couldn’t see the need it would fill. Luckily, Ben Fry and Casey Reas absolutely ignored my opinion. And good for them: the teacher, after all, isn’t always right.
