Conrad Quilty-Harper has written an article for Telegraph.co.uk about how data is changing how we live. It’s a list of 10 real-world examples in the fields of Shopping, Relationships, Business deliveries, Maps, Education, Politics, Society, War and Advertising.

Although the article is rather focused on the benefits of data mining for companies than for humans there are examples that show fundamental shifts in our society.

As one of the commenters points out there are other domains that make good use of data collection and analysis like Health Care, Crisis Information Management, Urban Sensing. It’s a good read — I just wished Quilty-Harper would have gone in more detail about possible implications in privacy and security.

Collection of 30 Infographic Maps

Webdesigner Depot returns to the information visualization space with a post listing 30 Superb Examples of Infographic Maps. The quality of the presented works ranges from clearly designed, information dense maps like the Margins Of Voctory to rather groovy illustrated pieces. Nonetheless, having a look can’t hurt and there’s probably some maps in the that you haven’t come across already.

Francesco Franchi, Art Director of Intelligence in Lifestyle, curates an inspirational collection of infographics on Flickr.com. Beside the main infographics from IL there are two more, smaller collections: Analisi Grafica and Letteratura Grafica.

Letteratura Grafica an attempt to translate some pieces of literature classics in a non linear way through two dimensions graphics and maps.

Guardian Datastore Group on Flickr

The team behind the Guardian Datastore has created a Flickr group dedicated to data visualizations. The aim is to have a centralized place to share the visualizations created with the public datasets from The Guardian Datastore. The group can also be beneficial to get more feedback on your own visualiations from the community. Currently the images in the pool are rather basic but this will change as soon as more people start sharing their works.

A Primer to InfoGraphics from iShift.com

Andres Ross from InstantShift.com has written an article about information graphics entitled: InfoGraphic Designs: Overview, Examples and Best Practices. He starts with answering the questions “What is InfoGraphics” and “Why using InfoGraphics”. Then goes on with to telling a bit about its history and the different types that can be distinguished.

Don’t expect too much depth in the written part. The majority of the article are examples and best practices of information graphics. The collections features some great information graphics alongside rather poor visual creations. Thus, we can’t really agree on the “Best Practices”. It’s certainly a broad range of examples — unfortunately the lack of well-founded information about information graphics reduces the usefulness of the article.

We’ve seen a lot of these collections lately but maybe you find something you haven’t come across yet.

3 More Collections of Infographics

We’ve spotted 3 collections of information graphics on Flickr. For those who didn’t already know, Flirck.com is an excellent tool for archiving, sharing and collecting images. All three collections are archives of graphics done by the uploader – Density Design, Good Magazine and Público.

Density Design

Desnity publishes 16 full albums of their creative work. Each album is related to a certain project and illustrates nicely the work process and the broad range of their creations.

Good Transparencies Archive

Good’s collection consists of 80+ Transparencies previously published in their magazine or their blog at Good.is.

Público Infografías

The Infografías collection is a small selection of infromation graphics of the Público done by the inhouse team. It’s currently a very small set but seems to be growing like the other albums from Público.
