It seems worth a look if you've started or plan to start working in geo-spatial analysis.

The InnoVis Lab from the University of Calgary are running a study about the effectiveness of information visualization in search results. Participants of the study are asked to use a visual search prototype for a time period of their choosing and fill out short questionnaires before and after using the system. The purpose of this research is to better understand performance and usability issues of information visualization supporting search on the Web.

At the Where 2.0 conference Google announced the new Maps Data API.The official descriptions goes:
The Google Maps Data API allows client applications to view, store and update map data in the form of Google Data API feeds using a data model of features (placemarks, lines and shapes) and maps (collections of features).

Just Landed extracts travel information from Tweets and maps the journeys on a map. The map itself remeains two dimensional but the "flights" are visualized in as three dimensional curves. A chronological order of the Tweets makes it possible to review a certain time period.

The NY Times Interactive team has put together an interactive visualization displaying the spread of the swine flu virus. The applet is a static map with interactive markers showing the amount of confirmed cases. The Guardian has created a similar application but their version shows the spread in relation to the past dates which helps to understand correlations and directions of the spreading.
